Try the above site. They have a large selection of freeware and shareware in numerous catagories and will probably have something that will help you.
Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.6 seems to be what you are looking for and is freeware. But look the site over and you may find something you like better.

Does anybody know of a good free spyware remover?
I have over 200 threats 😞
One of the best around at the moment.
Or you can do an online malware scan.
For example at:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Also both free.
Edit: AdAware is another goodun [as mentioned above]
Originally posted by ludzfirefox also gets spyware... but to answer the question, spybot and adaware (as already mentioned) are both very good and free
Are you one of those who swears by IE (never touch firefox) but get hundreds of viruses/spyware reports every month? Switch to firefox! http://www.spreadfirefox.com/

How do you know that you have 200 threats ?
This sounds extremely high, even for a compulsive right hand driver. What told you you had 200 threats ?
I guess that's what you were thinking too Mr Hound.

How does firefox get spyware? The only thing those spyware-sweepers find on my 'puter is cookies which are auto-deleted when I shut firefox anyway.
deleting cookies isnt going to help, whoever told you that? once you have the cookie, a harmful one, it can change the registry and do all sorts, usually changin the home page of your browser

Use this.
It's not free, but you can get a 90 day free trial. I'm guessing that the virus you have is the thing that sent you the message.
I've seen a few of these things, including a program that claims to be an antivirus, and makes bogus claims about what viruses your computer has. It actually came to me when a friend downloaded it, thinking it was a free antivirus, and it sent e-mails to everyone on his messenger list.
I use this program, and i payed for it once the trial ran out, it's relatively unobtrusive, and you get a free scan from the company that makes your OS, so there's no harm in letting it purge your PC 🙂

secondly, you're half right and half wrong, yes, cookies cannot change your homepage or your registry you are right, in fact a cookie is just a text string that is usually used to talk to the web server next time you go to that web site, usually storing password and username.... however, spyware is very often installed on the system because the user thinks it is a cookie they're installing, the web site will say something like "rhp wishes to install a cookie to recall details" you click on yes when in fact you've clicked on a link to install software, i.e. spyware... another method is often in the form of a pop up, whatever button is clicked, yes or no or even close (red x) it will install spyware... in fact i.e. is probably the best browser for eliminated this kind of software installation, to say mozilla doesnt get spyware is naive, that's like saying its not possible to download software through mozilla...
most spyware will simply record web tracks and send it back to the company who put the spyware there so they can conduct a survey.... however, a lot of spyware is a headache, changing the home page, recording keystrokes (keyloggers) of passwords entered, changing registry details... in fact, if spyware replicated itself within your system, it would i guess be classed as a virus
