I was called to a house that had squirrels , supposedly in the loft. Pest control is not
my line of business, it was for a friend, one of those desperate calls, ive called
everyone else, i have a quotation for 750 pounds in my hand, can you come and
save me from these squirrels and financial disaster.

On inspection of the eves of the house it became apparent that yes indeed there
were resident squirrels. How to get them out I wondered? The householder
insisted that i set traps, which was against not only my nature, but my better
judgement, yet they were baited and laid. After ten minutes i heard the ominous
sound of the trap snapping shut, but to my astonishment, both trap and squirrel had
landed on the pathway, nor could i decide who was more astonished, me to see the
squirrel alive or the squirrel to see me. He looked up at me from the concrete
pathway, his eyes wide, mesmerised by fear, breathing rapidly as one does when
one has been abruptly ejected from ones home by a giant. I followed him around
the building as he clung for dear life to the pebble dash and lodged himself in a
corner on the front window, unable to move for fear. It was clear that he was an
adolescent, aborted from his home and seeing the world for the first time. His
mother came to the back garden and petitioned to him in little bleating tones, still he
would not move. Feeling more joyful than i had been for a while, that my mission
was accomplished without the loss of life, i gleefully returned the wooden eve to its
original place and hammered home the galvanised nails and went home happy that
fortune had shined upon the squirrel and his mother, that despite their loss of home
with winter ensuing, they were alive, how i could not explain, for the traps were set
and the passage way from eve to the outside world as narrow as a fist. Yet he had
traversed the gauntlet and lived to tell the tale.

Next morning i received a call, there was still a squirrel trapped in the eves it had
been scratching all night, would i re open the woodwork and set more traps,
unbelievable and without explanation, the same thing happened again, the squirrel
set off the traps but was ejected from his home through sheer fright, unharmed. I
found him cowering near the wheelie bin, nor far from where his sibling had landed
only yesterday.

It dumbfounded me, looking at him, shivering with fear, his first steps taken against
his will, into a world of cats and foxes and humans and motor vehicles how any
mortal creature would want to harm him or have him killed. If you had seen him i
doubt you would have had the heart to kill him either.

Mike, if you pardon intrusive squirrels what will hardworking owls, hawks and tree snakes have for dinner? Wondering if you

might also be concerned with the possibility of causing an imbalance within the intricate food chain pyramid global scales.

Velly solly about my royal goof, Alfonso. Somehow the old clot shifted a couple of times

since August 19, 2011, causing the memory storage wires to cross robbie with mikelom.

ill indulge you GP, yes indeed, owls and hawks must feed, but herein resides the point,
we are conscious of inflicting pain upon others, it is the beginning of spirituality me
thinks, its very essence, whereas the hawk has no empathy for the rodent.

I should imagine they will eat the "pardoned" squirrels, easy prey with them having no home or bolt-hole to escape to. Three squirrels hardly seems to amount to an infestation....what was the problem. Before you get too carried away with your altruism, robbie, you have made them homeless and vulnerable and probably unable to survive, especially the youngsters. Probably better to have finished them off quickly and humanely.

Errm... we're talking about a few squirrels here, the vermin of many a country - in large numbers too.

Can't say I ever heard of a 'homeless' squirrel. Poor sods, what's next? The soup kitchen for a few clories?

If they are vulnerable, so be it - it's part of nature. At least some bigger prey will get a meal, and stop the little beggars from begging at the local church next week! 😀

You're obviously a live-and-let-live kinda guy who's in tune with his surroundings and the creatures we share this planet with. The vermin on this planet are humans.
