Collecting stamps as a boy really opened up the world for me. History too, not just geography: all those British monarchs, and the transformation of Empire to Commonwealth. Even the defeat of Hitler, with stamps bearing his face over-printed with 'occupation forces'. I'm not an active collector now, but I still pay attention to what's on an envelope.

Karpov is into stamp collecting.
I remember showing him the original letters from the London-Edinburgh
correspondence match. 1825-1829.
These were before the first stamps so he gave them a special name.
I cannot recall what it was.
It was joke about a stamp that envoked the most complaints I've
ever had on Chandler Cornered. Some people thought the gag about
Santa dropping a turd down a chimney was taking things a bit too far.
But look at the stamp, what is happening?

This stamp dates from the time that chimneys got smaller due to the reduced amount of harmfull emissions. Kids still mainly got soft fluffy animals as presents.
Santa, who likes to dive in his free time, used to let himself drop in chimneys, falling down back-first (as if you would do when diving) and land on the soft bag full of fluffy animals.
But, unfortunatly, after chimneys got smaller (Santa also gained some weight during that time, but thats another story), Santa found himself unable to fall backwards in the chimney as he was used to.
The picture in the stamp shows one of the last times he was trying this.
Hope that explains๐
