Another good idea is to go to your local comedy clubs and support the local scene. Quite often there's really good artists who aren't well known.

You can get started now by listening to Jesse Thorn's podcast The Sound of Young America. He covers all kinds of cool culture, but he seems to have an aficionado's palette for stand-up comedy as well as hip-hop music.
