Queensland had been a Labor (read working-class and unionised) State for 30 years, so infrastructure was a bit backward - even in the 1960s suburban trains still hadn't acquired diesel engines there. You're right about the cattle trucks too, no padding, full-width wooden seating with multiple outside doors to save on corridor space, just like toast racks. 😕
