    I don't want to pay for Apple TV; does anyone recommend the best alternative unit for streaming data from an iPad to a TV please?

    try Chromecast it worked for me.

    Is that the dongle thing? Is it not just for online stuff? I'm also thinking photos etc.

    it is a dongle/ cheapest option about $35 streams just about anything check out some revues.

    I use EZ-Cast.

    I stream from iphone, ipad, computer, and works well.

    Is also a dongle like Chromecast.
