why do some bars not accept these as valid id? my first night back in glasgow and i get ID'd twice (bar manager to newbe barman - "i had to ID those kids, they just looked so young!" i'm a kid!) so i produce my matric card for st andrews uni. i have never had problems with it before, and i told the guy in the first pub (i laughed after i got ID'd in the second one and just left without the slightest bit of a fight). i mean-i was mildly pissed off and was showing him (the guy in the first pub) my gym membership for my uni's gym, bank recipts from st andrews, membership cards from uni clubs etc. i mean, okay they weren't photographic but it wasn't as if i was going to get all this guaff with, you know, the "been in the wallet for 6 months" look just so i can get mildly sloshed with my friends, all of which have "more valid" id saying that they're over 18. when asked why they didn't accept student ID, he said it was 'cause they "weren't a student pub". when quizzed as to why student pubs accepted student ID if they're not really valid he told me to "drink up and get out. actually, don't even drink up! well, they can, but not you!"
what's the problem with student cards? why do some pubs accept them while others don't? not that many students have driving lisences, and i don't really want to take my passport out with me as it costs a lot to get it replaced.
i don't really care - there are still pubs that accept my matric card, but it's just irritating and embarassing getting chucked out of pubs when i am over age. meh.
a lot of people can get fake versions of these cards is the basic answer
I've seen fake versions of a few uni cards
they don't even need to look like the proper university student card
how does the guy at the bar know what your uni card looks like when they not the uni pub.
they don't so they play it better safe than sorry
here in ireland the goverment introduced age cards
anyone that wants can apply for one and you get picture id approved by a guards that like your bank card so easy to carry
much handier than passport or drivers licence
Aiside from having a good choice of uni, and I don't think things will have chnaged regarding the cards. St Andrews have their own design, and without being part of the NUS students won't have any nationally recognised card. It's fine around the town itself, where it would be known (and possibly up in Dundee - I never had to try), but in Glasgow? I doubt too many places would know it.

Originally posted by Peakitewell, i've used it in glasgow before without any trouble and the guys claim was that they'd be accepted in any student pub, not just the union. also, i think edinburgh is the only scottish uni to be a member of the NUS (they are definatly as they were part of a buying consortium that we were also part of - but they only switched a few months back and therefore i know they are members as i was press-ganged into sighning a petition or something telling them that they don't actually want to be part of the nus...) so it's not as if it's a *big thing* here...

I'm quite happy in my years up there I was never asked to prove my age. Although quite bizzarely I've been mistaken for a sixth former twice in the past month.
