I recently made a trip to the US, to Anaheim CA. (If you're ever thinking of going there, don't!).
Anyway, I tried to plan exactly how much money I would need - didn't want to run out and no point in bringing a load of worthless dollars home after all.
So I get to my hotel and they ask for a $100 deposit! What's that all about, no one mentioned that. I ended up having to go and withdraw an extra $100 and on the last day of my trip the hotel clerk gave me $100 dollars in cash.
What am I supposed to with this? Wipe my arse on it. After the crappy exchange rate and commision it was practically worthless.
Stupid dollar.

I have much the same problem every month on a much larger scale, as you can probably imagine.
Luckily, I pay most bills in USD too, so there is a saving there, but I would be much happier if the dollar was to make a staggering comeback.

Apparently if I'd had a credit card I could have put the deposit on that and not have lost anything, but I don't have one.
How do you function without a credit card?π

Why in the world did you go to Anaheim of all places? The U.S. is a huge country and you chose to go to the armpit of California.
Usually I pick the conferences in good places. San Francisco was a good one.
And, yes, not having a credit card is tough in the US. Here in the UK I never need one. I always pay debit card or cash.
In the US you really need one, but I only visit once a year or so.
Originally posted by VargI just checked the statistics ... credit card penetration rate is almost 80% in the USA and about 40% in Europe.
