I've got a friend who's interested in buying a telescope for looking at the constellations. He doesn't need anything too sophisticated, but he wants one that's motorized and preferably can take coordinates as input. Any suggestions? I think he wants to spend about $1000 CND, max.

Just get a copy of Sky and Telescope mag or Astronomy, there are many scopes available there. I even have a nice 10 inch mirror that only needs a conversion from spherical to parabolic but I haven't bothered, in Pennsylvania, there aren't many days where you actually see stars! Meade makes a good one that does what he wants, I am thinking an 8" would be about that price. Celestron also makes a decent one. The best bang for the buck however, size wise, is the Dobsonian scope, simple mount and you can even get self guided ones too. Dobson was a Jesuit priest interested in astronomy and about 30 odd years ago designed his mount for simplicity and it has taken the amateur world by storm.

There are many giveaways in your sentences above I don't know where to start..

a, "I've got a friend" = No you don't.
b, "I've got a friend who's interested.." = I am lonely and my balls are itching..
c, "looking at the constellations" = Ehem.. is that what they call naked chicks these days?
d, "doesn't need anything too sophisticated" = Am dumb.
e, "motorized and… take coordinates as input" = Not too dumb.
f, "Any suggestions?" = Am horny.
g, "think he wants to spend about $1000" = Very horny.

😛

d, "so I" = He admits, its him = not a friend = proves my first translation to be correct!

Why is "your friend" going to spend $1000 on a telescope when he can spend $5 on a magnifying glass and get the same effect?
