im wondering how many players have been lost to rhp either directly or indirectly due to bombings world wide since sept 11 2001. i remember playing a game with a guy when the sept 11 attack occurred.he lived just 2 blocks away from the trade centre. he made a move 2 days later and told me all about it. his moves were out of character so we just made any move so we could just message each other. rhp blocked all timeouts i think it was a month. ill be corrected on that, cant remember how the game finished but he stopped playing and his games just timed out. i wonder how he is nowadays, since then other bombings have taken place the most recent london. just wondering if anybody has had the same thing happen ?

Thankfully I'm unaware of anyone on the site affected in this way. Still the net widens: I've just heard on the news about a blast in Istanbul. I predict station closures here in London if anyone so much as farts out of turn later today: it's been four weeks and two weeks since the recent attacks...
i remember that a lot of nicks just died as a result of sept 11 and the debate of wether to claim timeouts after the ban was lifted was a hot topic . but how was we to realy know? emails were sent and not replied to. reminders ect still no reply. alot of rhp ratings rise overnight .not a sign of good play but by mishap.kinda ruins the rhp rating debate.
Ratings don't seem so important do they? I wasn't a member in 2001 so I didn't know that rhp lost several members at that time. No, we'll never know. I guess the best we can hope is that people found their priorities changed by events. Hopefully, too, many have retained their love of chess.

Originally posted by xlchainsawIf you mean you take the ratings with a large pinch of salt then yes, I agree that they are misleading. Basically I'm looking for a good game for me and the rating is the best guide you have. However I've had 1700+ players play a move I'd be shocked at if the average 13 yr old made it and am currently being pushed hard by a 1300+ player. I have now played enough games to be able to judge roughly that I'm at my right rating- I haven't taken a game off a 2000+ player so I'm probably punching a little above my weight.
i hope so. i dont know about you but i always rate my opponents against my own ability. that is weak, good , not bad, & excellent. win or lose. wether they give a quick reply ect.
We're way off topic, but it's less depressing than bombs! I take it you're a returning ex pawn-star. What is your impression of the site now?
Originally posted by PalynkaI don't think we were implying anything about relative importance. Anyway let's hope that it remains the case that our feelings are not tested in such a way.
I'm sorry if I don't think RHP members are more important than non-RHP members.
I'm not an hypocrite to say that I wouldn't feel more shocked if it was someone I remembered from the forums, but that is not the case.
