I think they are called cell phones because it relates as to the process of connecting a call from a "cell phone" to another phone (be it landline or cell phone). The signal from the phone goes from the phone, to a mobile tower, and from the tower, to a "Cell Center". I guess they just implemented "cell" to the phones.
