Was the Baby Boom generation (born betwixt 1946-1960 or thereabouts) the worst generation to ever curse this planet? Were they the most overindulged, underworked, uncreative, selfish, consumptive, self-involved, self-loving group of people to fail to make a significant contribution to the world that ever soiled this planet's soil with their very presence? Did they take, take, and take some more, stretch our planet to the breaking point, poisoning younger minds with their free love, hallucinogenic drugs, and unending willingness to do so much good with other peoples' money? Should the burden they will soon place on the world and the United States in particular, with their gospel of entitlement to the wealth and prosperity of other people, not to mention their holy belief that they have a God-given right not to work for a third of their lives, make them eligible for involuntary euthanization?
Or did they not suck?

Originally posted by sasquatch672They were the last generation that actually has/had a work ethic, sense of duty, etc. although they obviously stunk at raising kids because that's the generation that raised the greedy group that thinks you have to coddle them and their children and not hurt their feelings by holding them responsible for their own actions. It was the last generation that was well behaved in school, didn't talk back/rudely to adults, parents, authority figures in general ... excluding the stoned ones, who should count as their own generation. Yes, the soldiers were treated poorly, but it didn't help earn them any respect when some bragged about going into villages and what they did there (in general conversations). The baby boomers were an integral part of the Civil Rights Movement, and that's a far greater contribution than the numerous technological and societal advances they initiated or participated in. But dang, they raised a pathetic bunch of whiny kids.

since classic greece there hasn't been a single generation that didn't think "everything used to be better in my days" and "look at the kids today, they're completely useless". it's the reasoning behind the concept of the mythic "golden era", which the greeks thought to have existed in their past, before the new generations screwed everything up in a neverending downward spiral. they saw the decline as a natural progression of life, which couldn't be avoided.
what's funny though, is that all quantitative indices of the standard of living have slowly but steadily risen since that. we live longer and healthier than our parents did, as did they compared to their parents. sure there are occasional bumps in the curve both regionally and chronologically, but the trend is clear throughout the milleniums: everything keeps getting better.
why does the previous generations always think the next one is useless then? well, nobody really knows, but I suppose it's a side-effect of being left behind by the world, not being able to understand the new things. we get stuck with the music we listened to in our 20s, the old tv-shows, art, whatever used to be the 'new times' for us. and it'll happen to all of us. there's no country for the old men, instead we get stranded in the future.

take a look at that curve, and do a little calculation of when the people responsible for it were born. yeah, it was the boomers. they also got rid of american apartheid, conceived the modern women's lib, built up the modern computerized interconnected world etc. etc.
not bad from a bunch of parasites, huh?
of course they might've destroyed the world while doing all that, but it took a lot of work. and well, at least it left something to do for the generation x, the ultimate rubbish (so far).
