Good work Serendipity! I give you all the credit in the world for fighting the good fight.
I think if you really wanted to clean up the forums the first step would be to eliminate recs.
Rec hunting is what leads to the Jerry Springer mentality.
There are about about a dozen misanthropic Xanthoz-wannabes on the site who think to themselves, if I say something really obnoxious then I'll get some recs and I can be like Xanthoz.
The thing is that if you look at Xanthoz' work it's not that insulting. It's often clever and sometimes it's even funny.
The other thing about the dirty dozen is that they are on the site all the time. It's their domain. It's what they do. It's hard for an outsider with other interests and responsibilities to come in and fight with them. It consumes far more time and energy than it's worth.
Left to their own devices they tend to play endless games of what's in my underwear. When we come on the site and try to uplift the general tone and defend the weak, it's like ringing the dinner chime at the dog pound. They attack and start threatening us with bricks. When we don't respond in kind, they get even more rabid. A reponse like "Good Luck to You" or "Love, Joy, and Happiness to you and yours" is anathema to this bunch. Your saying love and light is for some reason like waving a piece of rotten meat in the face of an abused pit bull.
The other thing that I've noticed is that despite all of the protests that we should leave, once we start, they goad us to keep the argument going. Look at the D&D forum, those guys are desperately trying to goad me back in so that they can fight with me some more. It's almost comic when you think about it. "Oh no, the Dungeons and Dragons players are after me!"
I think for me the answer is to just leave the forums alone. They're not a nice place. I feel sorry for anyone who wanders in here.
Thanks my friend. But if I stay I'll just insight a Jerry Springer Flame Fest.
And I do feel sorry for the people who wonder in here. A couple Newbies came in the other day. One jumped into the game of insulting me and was immediately adopted by the misanthropes. But at what cost to his/her self esteem?
The other said something entirely reasonable on a topic that didn't involve me and was immediately attacked and ostracized. It's a prison/trailer park/lord-of-the-flies mentality and all we do when we try to spread our doctrine of tolerance is to work the inmates into a frenzy of blood lust.
Keep fighting the good fight until they ban you again. I may be back someday, but for now I'm worn out. The lunatics are running the asylum. They never quit and I don't have all day to respond to an endless stream of nasty vile insults.
Sure, just look at what some of the leaders have to say about themselves:
I don't like any of you.
Potential Killer.
Location: My Island
Incurable misanthrope, various personality disorders, like animals more than people.
You might find me in the early morning hours, throwing shapes in a disused tunnel near the M40
I am mean and heartless
Xanthos usually likes to welcome newcomers with her ascerbic comments in the "help" forum.
At least she's getting out and delivering her own special welcome directly to the people.
Believe it or not, she's some kind of "official" representative of the site.
Go ask a question in the help forum and she'll tell you you're brain dead for asking.
