My organic chemistry professor in college used undergrads to test short proteins for their affinity to a particular receptor on the influenza virus. A powerful computer could do similar work much, much faster, though it would be limited by the mathematical model given to it, whereas the researching student would be working with actual molecules. Still, at some point those models will be good enough even if they arent already to spam zillions of possible proteins to see their theoretical affinity for binding sites on viruses (and other microorganisms) leading to antiviral medications. This computer could lead to cures for AIDS, the common cold, the flu, herpes and other viral diseases we can't cure yet.
What? For better drugs?
And how come you are using Nordlys avatar!? What did you do with her!!? 😲
Nordlys has managed to haxx0r her way into control of my avatar. She has chosen to stick me inside a Faith Whale...kind of like how Jonah was inside the whale. I suppose it's a prison for some infraction she feels I have committed. She's been doing horrible things to me...horrible! She hung me by my hooves. She bleached my fur! And now this!
It's tragic I tell you, truly tragic.

But that's not what the drug companies are doing!
These drugs "in no way, shape or form, treat the cause of the illness but, in every way, work to greatly increase their bottom-line profits".
So there!

I think there is some kind of US government prize for the first machine to reach 1 petaflop, wonder if they will give it to the Japanese.....
What Does The Fastest Computer in the World Do?
Guess who uses a machine that can do 1 quadrillion calculations per second?

Give us your thoughts on this...
Anyway with chips advancing so fast these days, mutiple cpu's and all that, it won't be long till there are 8 CPU's in one chip which means they will talk to each other that much faster since they will all be within an inch of each other and no external wiring needed to connect them so each 8-plex will handle a bigger piece of the computing pie. So the 1 petaflop machine will have bragging rights for only a year or so.
I wonder what the rating of such a machine would be if it could be efficiently programmed to play chess. Needless to say, no human could beat it, I would think even at correspondence which if I am right the computers are still outplayed by humans.
