They spend much of it on the battle of Helm's Deep, when that's only one chapter, and they embellish a few things, like having Theoden being posessed by Saruman, and a comment by Legolas in the book along the lines of "I wish we had some Elvish archers" is made into actually getting his wish in the film. Quite a deviation from the book.

Originally posted by AcolyteTheoden was under the influence of Grima Wormtongue, who was Saurman's agent. If anything, I think that element of the book received short shrift in the movie. I thought a little more time should have been devoted to it and a little less time to Helm's Deep.

After reading the books at age 8 & failing to pull tonight I have the following answers... all of which may be wrong
Golum didn't have such a split personality - he was torn always between what was best for himself. But the film portrays his character better that I thought possible.
The trip to Helms Deep was described as picturescue but uneventful. No Wrag carried Orc attackes. Arogorn didn't fall off any cliff.
Helms deep was a short part of the 3rd book. They had more men but no Elven archers, and the day was saved by Gandalf turning up with the riders of Rohan.
Boromir's brother DID NOT try to take the ring (with Frodo attached) to Gondor. He was instead the opposite of Boromir in that he willfully let the ring go on it's path without being (too) tempted to take it.
Frodo & Sam were a much larger part of books 3 & 4 (50😵, but much of it was descriptive narative - hard to put in a film.
Liv Tyler wasn't in any of it until the 6th book.
Don't get me wrong.. the 2nd film was good. Better than the first. If you get chance to see the extended version of the first then do becaus eit is a better film and makes more sense. But above all, if you can, read the books. They're worth it.
