Anybody seen this guy's '50s and '60s films? For example, Rashomon, inspiration for several films including The Usual Suspects? Or Throne of Blood, his adaptation of MacBeth, set in medieval Japan? The Hidden Fortress, inspiration for the original Star Wars? Yojimbo, basically the plot for Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, which came out a few years later? And of course, Seven Samurai, adapted into The magnificent Seven? This guy must be one of the most influential movie directors of all time, and one of the best.
