I own all the Godfather DVDs and enjoy watching I and II as much as any movie I have ever seen, maybe they shouldn't have made III, buts thats beside the point. As those of you who have seen the movies know, II has flashbacks back in time. Now, TV stations are showing "The Godfather Saga", mostly as a weekend movie thing. This shows the movies in the chronological time order, starting from when Vito was a little boy and going on for around 6 or 7 hours. This version also has some deleted scenes, such as when Vito first meets Hyman Roth back in the old days when he starts the olive oil business, which is not shown in the original format.
Have you seen both versions, and which do you prefer?
Originally posted by PocketKingsI preferred the chronological version, but it did make it more difficult to know when to stop watching (normally 1 minute before I put episode three in the DVD player).

GF 3 is an abomination. Just like the last 3 Star Wars movies. GF 2 was my personal favorite.
I admit that the first one had an annoying kid in it, but that doesn't deny the excellent build up of power around the emperor.
The second was excellent. The way Skywalk....
Oh sorry, this is about the Godfather....oh well...
I thought GF III was okay, certainly better than many movies that are popular. However, Godfather, part II is one of the all time great movies, perhaps the best movie ever made.
Other candidates for best film ever?
The Searchers--the only John Wayne movie in the top 100
Apocalypse Now--it helps that Heart of Darkness is a great novel
Citizen Kane
Battleship Potemkin--the Cold War's dirty little secret: Hollywood filmmakers learned their basic techniques from Sergei Eisenstein

The reluctant gangster son theme is excellent.
Most of the actors were got on the cheap since they were at the less commercial stages of their careers (either beginning or the end) so I think this film has the edge.
Godfather III has all the ingredients of a poo sandwich apart from the bread.

I prefer the first one.

Originally posted by shavixmirI am unable to have a rationale conversation about Episodes 1,2, or 3 because they are all swill but you are right, this is about the Godfather and I think Andy Garcia, Sofia Coppola, and Eli Wallach (who I think is a fine actor) single-handedly did as much as they could to destroy GF I and GF II.

Sofia Coppola was the "Jar Jar Binks" of GF III and the greatest satisfaction was to see her death at the end. I weeped for joy.
