Fair enough (that agrees with Wikipedia). However, pythagoras stated that there are 40 million people in Tokyo, and I'm feeling pedantic this morning.

Medal Tally for 2004 Olympics with the population of country next to it.

g s b t
1 USA 35 39 29 103 (Population 295,734,134)
2 CHN 32 17 14 63 (Population 1,306,313,812)
3 RUS 27 27 38 92 (Population 143,420,309)
4 AUS 17 16 16 49 (Population 20,090,437)
5 JPN 16 9 12 37 (Population 127,417,244)
6 GER 14 16 18 48 (Population 82,431,390)

Per capita Australia wins by a big big margin. I think it is just because we are sports mad and have a healthier lifestyle because of it.

In the Olympics we generally come 4th of the medal tally, but judging as we have only 20 million people (half the population of Tokyo) in out entire country, I reckon that's pretty good. In the Commonwealth Games we kic ...[text shortened]... e world.
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE, OI OI OI!!!

PS. We need to ditch the Union Jack on our flag.
not enough medals to fill your mouth or head though...please ditch the flag..we would not have to tolerate your kind any more then...oh, remember the Ashes and what you were going to do

Why, given that your profile refers to your Scottish blood?

Quite.

It no longer looks so good for Australia, does it? They're even beaten by New Zealand, which amuses me no end...

Amazingly, it used to be a prereq that you had to have a criminal record to get in. Now you can't get in if you have one!!

Also, the Australian desire for sport is due to the majority of Aussies being decendants from Britain who invented a number of sports played by the aussies. Cricket and rugby being good examples. Swimming has been picked up due to the abundance of water and the warm weather which therefore makes it a free sport.

In terms of the flag it is and always has been up to the people of australia to choose. I seem to recall that a vote was recently taken and much to the republican dismay was in favour of remaining part of the commonwhealth.

Oh and by the way. Kick the flag and leave the commonwealth and you wont be able to come on here bragging about how good you are anymore. Just a thought.

Pound for pound, the Aussies tend to punch pretty much above their weight. I notice you failed to mention the much vaunted men's swimming team.
Lose the arrogance, though.

I think that's more like the figure of the New Zealand sheep population - the land of the sheep enjoyer. From all reports, they don't mind turning a sheep around.... ..that's what we hear!
