Medal Tally for 2004 Olympics with the population of country next to it.

1 USA 35 39 29 103 (Population 295,734,134)
2 CHN 32 17 14 63 (Population 1,306,313,812)

6 GER 14 16 18 48 (Population 82,431,390)
Per capita Australia wins by a big big margin. I think it is just because we are sports mad and have a healthier lifestyle because of it.

Australia is the greatest sporting nation in the world per capita. We never have the biggest Olympic team, not do we top the medal tally. In the Olympics we generally come 4th of the medal tally, but judging as we have only 20 million people (half the population of Tokyo) in out entire country, I reckon that's pretty good. In the Commonwealth Games we kic ...[text shortened]... e world.
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE, OI OI OI!!!
PS. We need to ditch the Union Jack on our flag.

Bloody convicts!
Amazingly, it used to be a prereq that you had to have a criminal record to get in. Now you can't get in if you have one!!
Also, the Australian desire for sport is due to the majority of Aussies being decendants from Britain who invented a number of sports played by the aussies. Cricket and rugby being good examples. Swimming has been picked up due to the abundance of water and the warm weather which therefore makes it a free sport.
In terms of the flag it is and always has been up to the people of australia to choose. I seem to recall that a vote was recently taken and much to the republican dismay was in favour of remaining part of the commonwhealth.
Oh and by the way. Kick the flag and leave the commonwealth and you wont be able to come on here bragging about how good you are anymore. Just a thought.
Originally posted by pythagorasPound for pound, the Aussies tend to punch pretty much above their weight. I notice you failed to mention the much vaunted men's swimming team.
