A soldier is trained to kill, and yet may not understand what the training is all for.
If on the first occasion of a slaying a soldier might just repent a mis-led or misunderstood reason for believing his cause.
That wouldn't be densitisation, but complete remorse.
If so, would he be a changed man without any ability to live a normal life ahead, as per my OP?
science and psychological effects. Never the less, i must point out that citing being
misled, or misunderstanding ones role, or believing in a particular cause is not a valid
defence in itself, as the Nuremberg trials of the 1930's established, for ones conscience
should prevent one from committing atrocity. This is compounded by the fact that our
conscience can excuse us or find justification for about anything, heck, even Mengele
attempted to justify his atrocities on kids stating that future generations would thank
him for his work on genetics.
I suspect that many persons are never the same again and yet we are individuals and
must react differently, some are traumatised and some are remorseless.
why do you ask Mike? Is it just a passing thought about the relative value of life?
has your recent experience made you reflective of the value of life? its good to
reflect me thinks, trouble is we live at times in an environment that's not very
conducive for it, were just like so busy trying to live and make a living, before we
know it, were down the river bank having taken nothing in about the scenery.

When, after some time serving in the field, the opposition entered a trench the young man bayoned him and as watched him die he was remorseful, and he realised the opposition was just a family man same as himself. He suffered tremendously afterwards. 😉
I asked in GF because I know there are many Vietnam servers here, and I wonder if those who killed do have remorse or strong feelings of regret for killing, or have disassociated their actions because they killed 'the enemy'.

I've always (well since they came into being of course) been a big fan of Monty Python. Boy was I wrong getting into this thread.
Traffic lights? Only when they're red.

Edit: passed myself laughing typing the above, as only a Monty fan could possibly have any idea what the above is about!

now,
if yer asking if the act of killing another human will change yer life...
well,
heck yeah...
sometimes in small ways, the professional soldier may even keep score...
sometimes in strong, irreversible ways, and psychosis will set in...
but,
if you take a life, intentionally or not, you will not come through the doorway of that experience the same az you enter...
teaching to kill is not noble...
interesting the changes that have been wrought in this thread...

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
