@shallow-blue saidIt's a pretty standard way of indicating footnotes.
One, people who use multiple asterisks are just as mad as people who use multiple exclamation marks.

@fmf saidNone whatsoever.

For me, these forums and playing chess are my recreation, nothing more. My views on the meaning of life I have carved out for myself come from my faith and my books. Pretty boring I suppose, but that's who I am. 🙂

@mchill saidRecreation, to my way of thinking, is an indispensable component of the meaning of life.

Engaging in recreation is one of a whole range of things made possible by our human capacities.
And exploiting what our human capacities enable us to do - according to our unique tastes and wants - lies at the very core of the meaning of life.
Indeed, I think the fact that we can, each of us, choose or create and enjoy recreation ~ particularly in the company of others ~ is an undeniable part of the wonder of life.
So, I would not dismiss recreation in the way you do.

@fiandrunko saidHa ha.
Crush your enemies
See them driven before you
And hear the lamentation
Of their women…
The OP rules out the the philosophy of chess.
And that includes your subset: the philosophy of chess against men with wives, mothers, sisters and daughters.

@fmf saidThere has been a lot of occasions where I could cite lots of examples where I’ve learnt quite a lot about about a lot of things from lots of people here at RHP.

@divegeester saidWould any meaning be lost if your memory of them were somehow removed?

@fmf saidSeeing posters come and go like Gramps and Handy reinforces the idea that we are all just specks of dust in a meaningless universe. Todays headlines will be tomorrows fish and chips wrapper.

@the-gravedigger saidAs long as we remain in somebody's memory, we are still alive.
