In what ways* do these forums and playing chess** and people you know*** here contribute to the meaning of life**** that you***** have carved out for yourself******?

* be they trivial or otherwise
** I don't mean the philosophy of chess
*** to whatever degree you feel you can
**** whatever you take this term to mean
***** for you 100% personally

One, people who use multiple asterisks are just as mad as people who use multiple exclamation marks. Just ask Havelock.

Two, I'm more interested in the meaning of Liff.

It's a pretty standard way of indicating footnotes.

None whatsoever.

For me, these forums and playing chess are my recreation, nothing more. My views on the meaning of life I have carved out for myself come from my faith and my books. Pretty boring I suppose, but that's who I am. 🙂

Recreation, to my way of thinking, is an indispensable component of the meaning of life.

Engaging in recreation is one of a whole range of things made possible by our human capacities.

And exploiting what our human capacities enable us to do - according to our unique tastes and wants - lies at the very core of the meaning of life.

Indeed, I think the fact that we can, each of us, choose or create and enjoy recreation ~ particularly in the company of others ~ is an undeniable part of the wonder of life.

So, I would not dismiss recreation in the way you do.

The meaning of life?

Crush your enemies
See them driven before you
And hear the lamentation
Of their women…

Ha ha.

The OP rules out the the philosophy of chess.

And that includes your subset: the philosophy of chess against men with wives, mothers, sisters and daughters.

There has been a lot of occasions where I could cite lots of examples where I’ve learnt quite a lot about about a lot of things from lots of people here at RHP.

Would any meaning be lost if your memory of them were somehow removed?

Yes I think so. I’ve found my thinking about certain spiritual matters to have been quite profoundly impacted and refined as a direct result of the 14 years of debates in that forum.

Good question by the way.

Seeing posters come and go like Gramps and Handy reinforces the idea that we are all just specks of dust in a meaningless universe. Todays headlines will be tomorrows fish and chips wrapper.

As long as we remain in somebody's memory, we are still alive.

The meaning of life, I would say, is to learn how to deal with life. Mistakes are good, as we usually learn something from them - trial and error. And if we don't learn, just repeat, then let's hope they were enjoyable moments. 🙂
