n green bottles:

n green bottles sitting on the wall,
n green bottles sitting on the wall,
and if 1 green bottle was to accidentally fall
there'd be n-1 green bottles sitting on the wall.

n-1 green bottles sitting on the wall,
n-1 green bottles sitting on the wall,
and if 1 green bottle was to accidentally fall
there'd be n-2 green bottles sitting on the wall.

repeat ad infinitum

subbing n for infinity. we still sing "n green bottles", but it means that we shall never have a minus number of green bottles. what if n=1? we'd be at -1 green bottles, which is impossible...

shh! lets pretend it never happened...

EDIT: actually-bowmann's way has the same problem as you just do not know the value of n. so we are repeating it -1 times now...
