I have little doubt that this originates from a Medieval folk ballad. Simon likely adapted it in the same manner that troubadours have covered ballads such as “Barbara Allen” and Robert Burns’ “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose”.
These days we might say that he covered it, but since it’s in the public domain, he’s likely exempted from copyright laws or the ethical dilemmas of plagiarism. I’ve seen this done a lot with the remaking of Greek plays, with literary magnates such as Goethe and Shakespeare taking literary licenses.
