...are making a run at the Toronto Blue Jays for the title of the biggest off-season money wasters.

Today they signed Kenny Rogers to a $16 million dollar two-year contract. LOL. Pathetic.

Where will it end for these baseball players? Their salaries are completely ridiculous.

They signed him? $16 mil over two years isn't that much money these days. 41 years old though...could be risky.

As long as we are going to live in a capitalist system you have to support the players' right to make as much money as the system will bear. Anything else is hypocrisy.

You walk an awfully hard line, Mr. Wingett.

To compare, the Blue jays have spent $102 mil on two unproven players. 4 yrs/$47 mil for B.J. Ryan and 5 yrs/$55 mil for A.J. Burnett. Hoochh-Tooie!

The Jays signed Ryan and Burnett? Dang. Maybe you guys won't suck this year. The Tigers (Mr. Rogers' contributions notwithstanding) probably will.

Nah, we probably still will. We also traded for Brewers' first baseman Lyle Overbay yesterday. Apparently we're in the hunt for Nomar as well...

Smart money for Ryan; he's got nasty, closer stuff. Burnett's a good, young starter; those clowns gotta get some pitching behind Halladay.

Over $11 million a year for a closer though?! He has only 42 career saves. The way the MLB is now, closers are a dime a dozen. Granted, the Blue Jays haven't had a reliable one in ten years but STILL that's way too much cash.

I'm not sold on Burnett yet either but I don't watch too many NL games so I've never really seen him in action...

You're 100% right about our need for starters though. Lilly, Loaiza and Batista didn't cut it as no. 2 starters.

Crap. Brewers are gonna suck now. They finally have a decent season (for them anyway) and they get rid of one of their better players. Bleh.

Ryan's been stuck behind big money, overrated closers like Urbina; when he gets his chance he should be awesome. His BA against and K/per inn ratios are awesome. I've seen him pitch many times against the Yankees; he's terrific. He was in big demand throughout baseball, so I'm not surprised he got a lucrative contract.

EDIT: I forgot his closed last year for the first time; here's his 2005 numbers:

G IP H R HR BB SO W L Sv P/GS WHIP BAA ERA
69 70.1 54 20 4 26 100 1 4 36 0.0 1.14 .208 2.43

Those are pretty awesome; he's been getting better every year and he's only 29 years old.

If it's any consolation they got some great pitchers in return. It may take a couple seasons for all their talents to materialise though. David Bush was great down the stretch and was arguably the Jays' best pitcher once halladay went down.

The K/BB ratio looks pretty impressive as well.

I hope you're right. I miss the days of Tom "The Terminator" Henke and Duane Ward. Those two were the best closers our franchise ever had.

Hmm. I suppose that does help. The set up man and closer we have are both great but it's a matter of getting to the point where they can use them to actually save a game. The Brewers had maybe 1 or 2 good starters last year, and Sheets was injured a lot. Hopefully now that they have some pitching, they'll get another good bat to replace overbay.

They have that Prince guy, don't they? He's supposed to be a big up-and-comer...
