I would have thought that of all people on this earth, God's supposed messenger needs no intercession from we earth bound people. If your god wants to call him home, then he will, regardless of people's prayers.

I do not pray, I have no religion.

But I would like to say the Pope has lead a long and virtuous life for which he should be applauded.

Sorry, but I cannot agree with that. The Pope's conservative views have led to the deaths of millions of Africans with his refusal to sanction condoms as protection against AIDS. The Catholic Church in Africa rails against condom use. The Pope knows that this is a death sentence for many African men and women - yet he actively promotes the anti-condom crusade.

The Pope is a good guy. Just a very old fashioned guy thinking that he is doing the Lords will. I like him even though I don't agree with many of the views he holds. He appears to be a very warm and caring individual just very set in the ways of the old world. I wouldn't mind hanging out with him.

Until 5 years ago another great old man was Nelson Mandela was ambivlant on the condom issue.

The catholic church can be blamed for alot of things. This is not my point.

But John Paul 2nd has come lived through nazi and communist oppression. This grounding has made him a tolerant man, striving to promote peace wherever possible. His workload of international visits has enriched the lives of many.

I don't have access to the real stats, but the condom / AIDS issue is certainly more complex than you suggest, see for example

Whether or not that is a better assessment of the situation I cannot say, but it does cast some doubt on the assertion that the Pope's view on contraception (not catholic dogma by the way, a common misconception (boom boom?)) directly increases the overall death toll from AIDS

Unfortunately this is exactly correct. The same applies to preaching against any form of birth control in countries which are hopelessly overpopulated.

I am Catholic (by upbringing) and have to agree with Maustrauser and also point out that this Pope is the man who for decades knew about the intitutional abuse of children by so called priests within his religion.
Any decent human being would have roared disapproval but this is the man who destroyed these young people's lives. My only sadness in the Pope's death is that within 2-3 weeks there will be another one appointed with the same conservative, secretive and destructive views because most of the Cardinals in power were hand picked by the late Pope.
This is from someone who stood awe-struck in Knock as an eleven year old during the Pope's visit to Ireland. Would I do it now---are you kidding. I mercifully was not one of those abused but feel strongly that these men should be held to account for their deviant, criminal actions.
