I was pondering this great mystery of humanity whilst sitting on the toilet recently and decided it best to pose the question to the wisdom of the forums in order to settle it once and for all.
Why is it that whenever you scratch your arse, you always have to have a quick smell of your hand afterwards?

I always presumed it was to make sure you didn't have smelly fingers. I mean there's no bigger turn off than stroking a girl's hair from her face and hearing: "Did you just wipe your bum or something?"

There's an old Chinese proverb on finger smells:
"It's better to sniff and clean, than to be sniffed and caught out."

It is more of a reflex action though, like the way people put their arm out if they fall (or are supposed to anyway, I have managed to surpress that reflex on several occasions but never to my advantage)

Most reflexes are there through trial and error... best to leave them as they are.

Well besides farting whilst drinking beer and eating curry.

I try not to anymore. Too often I have been disappointed by the phantom poo.

After all that effort, and nothing to show for it

I'll admit to looking down the toilet, but sniffing your fingers after having a scratch?! I can honestly say doing that has never even occurred to me until reading this thread. Why you'd want to do that is beyond me!
