it's a well documanted fact that more people wil support a war when it is actually going on than when it is brewing. This is reportedly due to the war itself creating more of an "us verses them" feeling. People feel obliged to get behind their troups & can identify with them, so when they see the opposition fighting back it stirs anti "them" feelings.
Plus a war gives ample opertunities for the government to show why they are the good guys and the opposition the bad guys. Especially as the media is easier to control in a warzone.

There is an interesting story on the BBC web site about the importance of spin and the media coverage of the war, and why the UK/US are loosing it here:

I thought they were losingthe spin war in the UK because they couldn't stop spinning:
"we're going in to Iraq to get the terrorists" changed to
"we're going into Iraq to take away his chemical weapons" which changed to
"were going into Iraq to save his people from his brutal regeme"

Also "the war will be over in weeks" has changed to "the war will be long and draw out, with no quick solutions"

ouch! obviously i wasn't kidding when i said that it was probable that the arabs and muslims would see it as a holy war.

Does anyone out there think that iraq has posed a significant threat over the last 12 years dispite the UN sanctions? and if so do the same people or others think that North Korea poses an even greater threat in the present crisis?

and also the way in which Slavery was banned in Britain... a grass roots movement building up public opinion to a moral agrument that forced parliament to ban such debasement of another human being, shows the importance of political pressure to solve problems also.

don't believe it just because it's on a T-shirt.

slavery was outlawed in the US after a war, true. Everyone else (Brits 1st) just got together, discussed it, & decided to outlaw it without a huge bloody war.

Naziism & facsism (sp?) in the form of Nazi germany were put down by war. But they were allowed to gain power because of the crippling economic sanctions placed on Germany after WW1, so you could say they were caused by a war too. And they didn't go very far; they still exist in all areas todays society.

Communism wasn't defeated by war, unless you count the cold war which is almost the exact opposite of traditional "hot" war. It collapsed under the strain of itself in Russia. China didn't, but is instead turning to capitalsim because they've realised there's a buck to be had.

nb. Andrew, if you don't stop posting the same/similar answers to me just before me I'm coming over there & I'm going to take you keyboard off you!😉

hey. aside from the motivation side communism isn't that bad. all the problems of today have come about through greed and hate. you can't destroy hate with hate. It just increases in strength- hate=evil. take the palestinian/israeli conflict for example

agree. but then we americans have never really been known for being civil. usually takes a war to decide things... that way, there is no haggling for a century as to who was right and who was wrong. also apologize for misspelling(s)...

That is a very stupid statement, and highlights how stupid your thread is. Why not get all the American, British and Iraqi troops to stop fighting and post in "the longest thread in rhp history! " instead. That way you can win the Nobel Peace prize as well as the anoying thread prize
