Crap screwed that up...ok here is what I was going to post before hit
that damn "enter" button rather than "tab".
Watching "The Luzhin Defense" again on HBO and I started
thinking...remembering when my dad taught me....how he used to
crush me like a bug and then laugh and set the board back up
again...I even remember he knew the Lopez about 10 moves deep
and he had never read a chess book. I was 4. When I was around
7...and had read some I finally started to beat him...this of course
pissed him off to no end. Fathers feel this way I guess...how can their
child...whom they taught be better then them. He took my books away
and started studying them himself...I know...sounding like "Searching
for Bobby Fischer"...but it is the truth.
My father always did push me to be great in everything I tried...I was
actually the #2 rated wide receiver in football in Kentucky before I
broke my arm...had lots of scouts checking me out for alot of major
colleges...was even offered a four year ride to Georgia before I got
flipped and my dreams went down the drain. No biggee though.
Just wanted to know if anyone else out there had the same kind of
parental pressure to be the best...my dad's famous line is "If you are
going to be a ditch digger...be the best damn ditch digger there is"
I have really tried hard to be that...and am very proud that he instilled
in me early the will to learn...to fight...to be better than just average.

There was no direct pressure from my parents, but failure just wasn't
an option. I got some encoragement to do well, but never any
recognition when I did - as if it wasn't good enough.
I guess it worked though because I spent my childhood perminently
trying to get that approval from them (which I never have done) and
that pushed me to succeed (sort of) in most things. We don't exactly
have a close relationship though.
Enough whineing
