Thread about where to put the “World Cup” thread

General

1 edit

Given that most of the other forums and especially the Sports forum, this is a thread to propose and respectfully request that when the time comes we can have a solitary World Cup thread held in the General Forum.

The World Cup this time around is going to be especially epic: 48 teams playing 104 matches across three countries (Canada, US and Mexico) from 11th June - 19th July.

Only 155 days to go ⚽️

Diver, I'm wondering why the 3-country format. Is this the first time they did a 48 team field, or something?

I'll hang up and listen

Money.

Edit: will still be a great spectacle and good fun for those interested.

I believe this is a good idea. The number of inactive forums which never really got any traction (Sports, Tech, Culture) need culling - but I will see if I can merge the existing content into General.

I sincerely hope not too many of the teams boycott the event because of Trump and ICE, but it would be understandable if they did.

Similar to chess, I think international sports competitions might help to hold our world together, despite everything.

Obviously, the main "World Cup" thread would not be the place for political comments.

(I did review and confirm that this was a meta-thread about where to place that thread before writing this post.)

Thanks.

I see that the “sports” “culture” and “technology” forums have now gone.

The World Cup is going to be a great spectacle and a welcome distraction tbh.

@diver

Yeah, General seems the correct place, and if people want to digress into political commentary, they should start another thread or threads in Debates.

95 now.

Question will it take place as planned?

I'm sure it will. Sports covers over all the worlds problems.

Can't see Iran taking part but you never know. Also Mexico is a mess after they killed a top narco gang leader so it's not just travel to the states that people might want to avoid. Should just host it all in Canada, I'm sure they could manage.

Was half tempted to go if Ireland qualified but highly unlikely now. Will wait for Portugal and Morocco to be hosts.

Confident the ticket prices will drop for a lot of the games.

Which sport's World Cup are we talking about here?

That’s a rhetorical question…right? Even I know it’s baseball although I think you may have meant “series” rather than “cup”.🤔

The boks are only winning their third cup in a row in 2027, so I'm confused.
