There seems to be a typographical error in my local newspaper: in the Sports section the baseball standings have a "Detroit" in first place in one of the divisions. However, I watched a team called the "Detroit Tigers" yesterday and it's obvious this collection of misfits, hasbeens, neverweres and neverwillbes couldn't be in first place in my 5 year old grandson's T-Ball league. They might as well have used fairy wands instead of baseball bats for all the damage they did to 60ish Randy Johnson's pitches and their play in the field, while amusing, appeared to be more the work of skid row drunks than major league baseball players.

Could someone please correct this journalist gaffe?

The only thing that could explain this is that they must be Ligers; a mix between a lion and a tiger bred for it's skills in magic.

It's a four game series, my friend. I wouldn't start your gloating just yet. We still lead the majors in ERA and homeruns. Plus, even with the last two losses we still have the best record in baseball. Everyone seems to be expecting us to take a June swoon, but I say this team is here to stay. If not the division title, then surely the wildcard spot.

Your starting pitching HAS to crash soon. Those guys are just too young and inexperienced to keep it up all year.

It's never too early to gloat.

While I understand that newlyweds have a period of unrealistic euphoria before the harsh reality of the world comes crashing back upon them, this "Tiger" team looks like many of the recent ones (Reds, Royals of a few years ago for example) who started great only to plunge back into expected mediocrity (at best). You should confine your daydreams to longing for your first .500 season since the first year of the Clinton administration; that is unlikely, but possible. But save the thoughts of playing into October for fans of the heavyweights.

How about those Royals? It looks like my little league team could beat them...

At the start of the season I might have happily taken that .500 season. But now I'm a believer. Give me a postseason berth or give me death.

Justin Verlander, 7-3, 2.55 ERA, will be the American League rookie of the year. You heard it here first.

The Tiger ERA will be going up a bit; though the Yankees were kind enough to play mostly their second string, guys like Andy Phillips, Terence Long and Melky Cabrera still lit up the "best pitching staff in the majors" for 11 runs last night. They were aided, of course, by the guys in big red noses and floppy shoes playing in the field for the Tigers who seemed amazed that major league ballplayers could hit the ball soooooooooo hard. It's looks like only a Novgorod style dive from most of the American League could keep the Tigers anywhere near the top in the long run.

What would you do if Bonds hit 715? I'd pull the mic on the radio guy!
