I was just wondering what the norm is with timeouts for everyone. I am dealing with my first one, and don't know whether to just take the win or not. And since I am not a member(yet) he is taking up one of my 6 games.

He does not appear to have put up any vacation flag or anything of the sort, and hasn't moved since december 2'nd.

Thanks in advanced.

Take the win if you like...

Send a reminder and wait a day...

Did you check to see when they last moved in any other games?

Whatever you do will be ok.

This happened to me once, when I was coming back from the Olympiad. I sent my opponents a message saying I'd be travelling, but ONE guy thought it was a good opportunity to claim a win. But he was an Australian, and that's about what you'd expect, lol.

Admittedly I didn't bother with any vacation thingies, cos I'm generally crap with rules, and didn't know what all the right protocols were. My other opponents were cool with it though, and nothing else resembling an underarm delivery came my way, 😛.

If you really don't know where your opponents gone, I guess it's just up to you. I mean, if they've died it's there's not a lot of point waiting around. If someone in their families died they may not feel like carrying on for a bit either. But if their comps blown up, they might just take a few days to show up, and you often won't get any messages till then.

If your opponent IS Australian, then the rules are quite clear. Claim a win; it's how they like to play the game, 😉

Thanks for the imput, I've decided to send him a reminder and wait a day or two. I've got the advantage anyways, and I don't really want to seem like the kinda person who cashes in on easy points. I enjoy winning, but only when I win as a direct result of my own thoughts.

An admirable point. The other side is that when you're playing against someone on the other side of an actual board, I bet you'd claim the win if your opponent was constantly staring at the ceiling, checking out the chicks in the audience (everyone knows how hot women get over chess players!) and stuff. I mean: you both know in advance what the time settings are. I have no mercy with players who log on every day, have a measly 30 games to play, and still wait the full 7 or 14 days before making a move.

If such players run out of time, tough!

Why not see what your opponent does?

Look at their completed games, if they take timeouts then go ahead, if all their games are played to a finish then it's up to you.

ALSO WHY NOT JOIN THE SITE AND DO AWAY WITH THE GAME LIMIT RESTRICTION!!!

Beware cutting someone slack on the timeout. I didn't take the timeout on two tourney games, but the player didn't have the vacation sign up and didn't move for days after the expiration of time. Fair enough. THEN, I went on several days' absence with a vacation flag up, and the person immediately took the timeouts on me after complaining on their homepage about the unfairness of others taking the timeout on them.

😠

I wasn't amused and told them so.

No good deed goes unpunished yet again.

My own style will to be to wait a few more days and then claim a timeout if they don't have a flag out, unless it is pretty clear to me that my opponent was likely to win the game.
