I reckon if you time somebody out who is on vacation, nobody should get any points and nobody wins or loses the game. That way, those that want to time them out, can do so, but it will encourage them to wait longer if what they seek are points and won game counts.

Automatic timeout solves the problem and will close further discussions on this matter.

so what if I leave my VF on 365 days a year? I'd never lose any points (except in leap years).

except that it doesn't allow any room for exceptions. MAybe I don't want to TO and get points. Maybe I am wierd and want to play chess?

After reading through all of these discussions, and there are many more threads where this topic has been debated and I've read a lot of those, I'm starting to lean towards Ravello's idea. Auto timeout.

It seems kind of harsh, but it does solve a lot of problems.

Setting your VF flag would also stop you making moves.

but couldn't I drop my flag, make my move, and raise it again 2 minutes later?

I agree. I stick to my principle of always claiming time-outs unless my opponent mails me beforehand. It annoys some people but I'm consistent and my profile does say that I claim on expiry.
