Who did that?
This is a case for the time-out police.

Edwin ...

Technically there is nothing you can do against getting timed out when on holiday ...

Unfortunately we have some inconsiderate people here who time you out even if on holiday ... (I ain't naming and shaming anyone !!!)

Normally though you can expect a little consideration (well of most people)

Hope that clarified a little

I would like to see no vacations, a timebank on every game and automatic timeouts on all my games.

Sick of people who can't be bothered playing!

but maybe people have legitimate reasons why they can't play for a while - after all, (i'm about to blaspheme here, so if you're a sensitive soul, don't read further) it's only chess. lots of stuff in life is more important. maybe there's a death in the family, their kid gets sick, they lose their job etc...
and if someone doesn't move, just start another game and wait for a bit. i agree it can be annoying, esp if they start a 'go-slow' when they begin losing, but it's the price we pay for the flexibility we sometimes need when life intrudes on our chess time.

i think timing someone out on vacation shows an indecent obsession with ratings points. it's just a number, people...

Sure. But if those things happen, losing a few games is not really a problem.

I have had people not move for months. When they resume playing, their rank is about 900 because they have been timed out twenty times. I hate timing people out - I want the site to do it for me. Gets rid of all the arguing over vacation timeouts and accusations high rank players get there by timing out as soon as they can.

A 14 day timebvank gives people an option for not playing for over two weeks. I would like to see auto time out on timebank expiry and x days as an option on open invites.

It would depend.

If the game is one of those 7 days by 7 days things, then I'll be very lenient towards people and certainly not time them out before multiple warnings.

If it's a 28 by 28 day affair, I have no patience and will probably time them out as soon as I can (unless they notify me why they're not playing).

Well, this is what I'd like to do, I end up having guilt trips about the whole matter.

Same goes for vacations. If you have a vacation sign up for 1 or 2 weeks, fine. If it's up for 1.5 months....cya.

It was a clan game, however I dont really care seeing as it was a clan game for a clan I am no longer in.

It's intended to be a vacation from RHP, not a holiday-like vacation in a sunny Pacific island drinking rum from a coconut bra. Don't always assume that if people don't give details about their vacation from RHP, that they are out having a blast. If you wish you could automatically time everyone out as soon as possible, you are saying "I don't care if you come back a day late or a month late, I want my points".

I want to suggest that Russ considers giving each person a holiday timebank, so that when someone actually goes on holiday, and sets the flag, the game cannot be timed out. To prevent abuse, you will only have a set number of days per year (or subscription year) that you can use. Not sure if this will be a technical demanding function, but I think this will be fair.

how much holiday timebank would we get? In the US many people only get 10 days. People I work with get 67 days (not me!).
Vacation flag is also used by people who are away on business, inc. the army and off shore, so sometimes people will be away for much more than a standard amount of holiday. Once you start allocating 'vacation timebank' I believe that this will encourage people to TO whenever someone isn't using these days. The current system isn't perfect but it works. Any alterations that have been suggested leave us open to further problems.
