Just wait till Trump Corp flattens NZ to make it more golfable.
On my side, I'd rather talk about tone colors for Mandarin.
Something close to the Hanping system is my preference:
1st tone: (high level) blue for sky
2nd tone: (mid rising) green for grass growing
3rd tone: (low scoop) purple (Hanping uses orange)
4th tone: (high falling): red (angry/assertive/conclusive, even though that might not apply at all to the sense)
The usual example for teaching Mandarin tones and why they are important is "ma" [another example involves "shui jiao', which can mean "to go to sleep" or "steamed bun" (no, not that way, you naughty people) depending on the tones (I think we also have some examples in English where there's a difference in meaning depending on where the accent falls, but nowhere near as much as in Mandarin)]:
ma1: mother
ma2: hemp
ma3: horse (my mnemonic is "swayback horse" )
ma4: to scold
My advice to new Mandarin learners is to learn the individual word-tones yes, but also just learn the common phrases and the melodic shapes of those -- that's important because when words are strung together, some of the tones might change.
By the way, not sure how often this is mentioned, but English is also a tonal language -- it's just that tonality is used differently. For instance, a rising tone at the end to indicate a question, or a falling tone (I think it's the interval of a fifth) to end a statement.

TOCS
I've always thought a lot of meaning and mostly humor is lost when reading posts because people can't hear the tone.
Perhaps this site could develop its own TOCS so people will understand the tone and meaning behind certain posts, which would make the posts funnier or just help others to understand the posts better.

Nor can they hear the tone when reading economic textbooks, cabbage soup recipes, or the symbol for Pi.
I suspect this deep and profound thought process of yours is what's shaped your political views. 😏
