One has to bear in mind the degree to which Dublin was perceived - even by many Irish people - as a 'British city' [even seen by many as the British Empire's 'second city'] - to understand the bitter controversy [even to this day] surrounding the decision by one faction in the multi-faceted Irish nationalist movement to mount an armed rebellion in the city in April 1916.
