In the UK it only seems to be important when there is a major tournament, all the press moan that we (Britain) didn't win much, then for a year there is no financial support or media coverage untill the next championships... repeat the above indefinately.
I think the only times athletics gets in the press normally is if their is a drugs scandal or someone dies.

Originally posted by latex bishopbut we did have jonathan edwards dominating the triple jump for a while, and linford christie with the 100m. we're good, but we could be better!...

Yes, both are great in their fields, but they only got the support once they were officially the best in the world, and then only during major champoinships. There are no real facilities in the UK for developing new talent, Crystal Palace is apparently falling apart as we speak.
The British have a great habbit of making the irrelevant seem important when it suits us. Lets face it, curling - a gold medal was a great achievement for those involved but did it really warrent the media attention it got, are we that starved of scuccess that we will cling to anything as a nation? Even with the triple jump, its not exactly a blue ribbon event. Are Torvil and Dean really the sporting heros they are portrayed in the media - they danced on ice!
