Its an "en passant", quite legal within the moves of chess but a killer if you forget it sometimes.

If you're wondering how this move is rationalised, it's because pawns could originally only move 1 space at a time. The ability of a pawn to move 2 spaces in it's first move was intorduced to speed up openings, but it lead to the problem that pawns could pass each other by jumping 2 spaces and not giving the opposing pawn chance to take. To stop this the en passent rule was initiated, where a pawn that is bypassed by another pawn by it moving 2 spaces can take it as if it had only moved 1 space (but only in the very next turn).

Think of it as the pawn sprinting 2 spaces forward but getting it's head cut off as it runs passed the other pawn - it keeps running to the 2nd square before it realises it's dead.
