Let's if we can make this a long lasting, pleasant thread. NO SEARCH ENGINES, PLEASE

In March of 1970, the first USSR v. The World Chess Match began (there were 2 such matches).
Max Euwe was the captain of the "the World" team and wanted to use Elo rating to seed the players.

One person complained about this arrangement and demanded to play board #1 instead of Bobby Fischer.
And Fischer, strangely enough, finally agreed to play board #2 to keep the match alive.

Question: Who... played board #1 for "the World" team that year?

If you have the answer, just type HERE and we'll release it after everyone has a chance to answer it.

thank you

i was a sophomore in high school
i was a member in good standing of the not so good at chess club
i remember bobby fischer because chess and because daddy ranted about him being a communist
i wasn't that good at chess but there was a girl in the chess club that was out of my league that i had a fever for
i didn't care about chess at any level other than where i was at

i was then and still am rather aimless

interesting how even the smallest twig in the stormiest sea still floats along

This has run out of steam.

The answer is Bent Laesen of Denmark, who played world champ, Boris Spaasky on board 1.

Bobby Fischer played former world champ, Tigran Petrosian, on board 2

someone else give it a try

World Champion Bobby Fischer gave up his title to Karpov by refusing to play him in 1975.

Karpov first retained his title in 1978 against Korchnoi.
