Windows firewall is useless. You can get basically anyof the free offerings and it will be better.

Avast didn't do it for me - I tried it once between AVG versions. I just didn't like it, but I don't get many virus threats, so I don't know if it's really any good.
Found a interesting article - seems AVG is actually pretty crap: http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav_2.htm

Download "Hijack This"

run it and save the log file. Then go to any of the dozens of help sites on the net. They'll ask you to cut/paste the log into a post and they'll read the log and then tell you what to do.

Just type Hijack this into google and then read the other forums where people got help from the list google will give you.

I vote for AVG free edition with Windows doing the rest. I'm a chess idiot but I had nothing but trouble with Norton. I googled myself once and ended up with a Trojan but AVG seems to have contained it.

If you know it is a trojan [and not a virus] that you already have and want rid of it, I would suggest downloading SuperAntiSpyware [free version] let it scan and remove.

If you have trouble, then I would agree with the HijackThis suggestion above, be very careful not to try to use it without directions though or you could EASILY make things worse.

I have AVG free installed .
I got this message to install some active x thing and bam got the trojanhorse generic.
Its in the AVG free virus vault ,but after that i kept getting pop ups for an antispyware shield.I clicked that a few times when it came up and ended up getting more Trojans. They are all in the virus vault now but i still got pop ups for spyware and malware.I kept getting messages saying that my pc was being accessed by another pc.It also changed my homepage .
I had to restore my system to a few days back and the pop ups have gone.

Do i need to delete them from the vault or should i now keep them there.

Can my computer be accessed from another pc still or have i got it fixed through AVG.

spywareblaster stops malicious active x running before it starts and also spywareguard can prevent harmful BHO'S and spyware running rather than waiting for your machine to get infected before removing it. Both are free, use next to none system resources and combined are very effective at reducing such problems, especially when ran alongside an anti virus like NOD32 and good firewall like comodo (also free but very good). AVG is usually good enough an antivirus.

Download and run Rogue Remover. It's incredibly quick, superb. It's a useful tool to run anytime you have five seconds to spare... honest!
If you have anything lurking about that shouldn't be there, it'll remove all traces for you.

I had a Trojan in some hidden files that AVG was not able to remove. It was necessary to create a boot disc and delete the files through DOS.
