Before I pay for a tank and fish to go in it, would anybody be able to give me the benefit of their experience of keeping indoor fish?

How often do you need to clean, and how much of a pain is it to do?

etc etc

Any tips very welcome.

Thanks

I had a 75 gal tank many years ago and the one thing I would do differently now is go for a wider tank as opposed tall one. There were many times during cleaning, moving and placing things in the tank where it was a PIA because while even standing on a step-ladder I couldn't reach the bottom. Just my .02

Re: Cleaning. To be honest I don't remember how often I cleaned it. I did spend decent money on a good filtering system, hopefully others can make recommendations. I haven't had a tank for about 15 years. Wanted to get new often but I seem to move around every coupla years (changing countries even) and fish tank isn't conducive for that kinda life style

I do remember that you need (should) to get some "cleaner" fish and snails to help keep the glass clean of algae.

FWIW, it does sometimes seem like a lot of work but they can be great for relaxing/de-stressing. I remember many a quiet evening in with my partner of the time having quiet chats with a glass of wine or scotch with nothing but the fish tank lights on.

I did respond but it was removed cos I said they don't crop on your floor.

Buy a big tank! The bigger the better! At least 4' long by 1 1/2 ' deep and 3' high. Mine's 6' by 2' by 3'. Plenty of room for various fish!

Make sure you buy either very warm water fish or medium - don't mix - they'll die.

Buy a filter for all the way along the bottom under the gravel - saves a lot of fish waste cleaning! 😉

Also make sure you have good element lighting - that's what it's all about, as previous post. To gt home tired after a stressful day and just watch the movement and interaction is wonderful. get fish that can co-habitate too, of varying sizes - much more interesting.

Cleaning - inside glass with a pod on a stick - only once a week. Technology has moved on here too - so there's little drops of additives you can but that make life so much easier. You'll find the tropcal plants need pruning more than the glass willl need cleaning!

some fish only stay at the top of the tank..some only like be on the gravel..some will swim back and forth in the middle and some need to hide in between plants...so ask before you buy...and neon tetra are very inexpensive so 20 of them look very nice..very fast..neon red and blue strong line ( need to use a proper fish light ) and the red tailed shark..a
three to four inch fish that look just like a shark...black with a red rear fin.is not not expensive..they swim in the middle and 3 or 4 are really nice...catfish ( cheap ) are good bottom gravel cleaners...and a few snails are good for keeping the glass clean but once in a while you have to cull the number as they seem to like sex alot...

and they're hermaphrodites, so they swing both ways, sometimes simultaneously. you can't say that's not entertaining.

other advice:

goldfish aren't very exotic but it's eay to make it look like an accident if you get sick of them and decide to bump them off: just sprinkle lots of food into the tank.

a less subtle approach is to throw in a piranha or three;

send away for some sea monkeys, spinkle them in and watch them build a glorious civilisation in your tank. and make sure they know that if they don't, it's piranha time;

once you've bumped off all your fish, throw the tank out and download an aquarium screensaver. it's much less effort.

Thanks, some good advice, enough to help me decide to buy one anyway.
