I read a report saying that all animals ans local tribes people migrated to higher grounds days and hours before the earthquake and Tsunami.

Can anyone confirm this?

I have not heard about tribal people doing this. The tsunami has sparked a lot of talk about wild animals having a 6th sense... but I have not heard anything about any humans making a break for high ground before the disaster.

If they had, they could ask these humans what made them decide it was time to get someplace safe. This would answer a lot of questions that have been raised.

So, this would be very interesting if it were true... but I don't buy it, and have not read anywhere about it.

Now that I would believe!

"So, why did you guys all head for high ground?"

"Um, the animals all did... and we didn't want to get left behind."

No, you silly people! The tribal people prayed to the volcano god which sent them a vision. The volcano god commanded their chief to take (at least) two of every animal and all his followers to high ground because in his awful wrath he was going to flood the world and wipe out all the terrible sinners (people not of their tribe). As the volcano god promised, the earth shook and great waves flooded the land. But as he was a lowly volcano god, the effects were confined to his sphere of influence (the Indian Ocean) and were not on a global scale. The tribal people (expecting rains to last at least 41 days and 41 nights, and a flood to cover the rest of the earth) were not overly impressed with the volcano god's handiwork. At last report they were shopping around for a new god. One that is capable of causing a truly global cataclysm.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to notions they possess a "sixth sense" for disasters, experts said on Thursday.

Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.

The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards. "There has been a lot of anecdotal evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven," said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.

"There have been no specific studies because you can't really test it in a lab or field setting," he told Reuters.

Other authorities concurred with this assessment."Wildlife seem to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds ... there are many reports of birds detecting impending disasters," said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.

Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators. The notion of an animal "sixth sense" -- or some other mythical power -- is an enduring one which the evidence on Sri Lanka's battered coast is likely to add to.

The Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster and many ancient cultures viewed elephants as sacred animals endowed with special powers or attributes.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday. It killed tens of thousands of people in Asia and East Africa.

Here is an example of how animals comunicate... a song by The Presidents of the United States of America....

Presidents Of The United States Of America (1995)
Feather Pluckn'

A billions of birdies squawkin' out loud
talkin' in code to clams in the clouds
They send a secret message, they send it by worm,
some vibratin' spiders will receive the word

But that's totally
feather-pluckin'
insane!
Ten million monkeys all pick up guitars,
Nobody taught them how
Five thousand fishies rockin' really, really, really hard
Nobody taught them how
Check-out chicken drivin' (vinny's) little blue car
Nobody taught them how!

Flies like to fly, cause they don't like to stay
They're buzzin' in the ears of a chicken all day
Chicken understand and they pick out the code
Send a sub-sonic signal through the snot in the middle
of an elephant's long wet cold grey nose

But that's totally
feather-pluckin'
insane!
Ten million monkeys all pick up guitars,
Nobody taught them how
Five thousand froggies rockin' really, really, really hard
Nobody taught them how
Check-out chicken drivin' (vinny's) little blue car
Nobody taught them how!

Oh yeah, Oh yeah

Everybody's supernova

I'd like to see The President of the United States of America try that.
