any one in england know the rules of the tv licence ive switched off my tv only to be told i must detune it as well since its not pluged into a areil ive tryed to do this but a phone call from the post office stated a inspector will come to my house in near future and if they see a signal no mater how poor ie sound or snowy screen i will be prosecuted i only watch pre recorded videos plus do they have the right to enter your home? as if i refuse entry what happens.
They'll fine you.
The law states that you must have a licence for any TV equipment that is capable of recieving TV pictures, or can be made capable with minimal adjustment. So removing the plug won't wash, nor disabling the RF decoders, detuning reception etc.
You'll either need to get a licence or loose the telly.
You could consider watching video through a PC tuner card if your PC is quiet enough, and so dumping the telly wouldn't be that bad.
In terms of house access, they can't just come in: only the police can do that. They could go and get a warrent and a policeman to serve it, but unlikely. In the low level courts, they apparently just use their TV detection tech as 'proof' without need of personal on-site observation, which the courts seem to take as sufficient evidence. Or so its been rumoured: most likely by them. I am deeply suspiceous of their claims of the number of TV detections vans etc.
Originally posted by stokerIf rumour be correct, the TV detection vans use the horizonal retrace sync pulse to detect your telly: so if it is on, whether watching a video or just noise on the screen, that would still be detected and treated as licensable TV equipment.
thank you im suspious as well but since im not watching any tv i will refuse entery but again thanks
You're probably going to cause yourself a fair amount of hassle here for little gain, but the choice is yours.

because origionally there was BBC, only 1 channel, and no advertising. If you had a TV then it was to watch the BBC and therefore you paid a licence to pay for it.
Although there are many more channels now, the BBC still provides 2 (non-digital) channels without adverts, and for that we still have to pay a licence fee (~£130 per year?)
Originally posted by belgianfreakwell, it covers that, plus the digital channels, plus the radio plus what is still one of the best web sites going. Not bad for £130.

Hmm...what if you don't watch BBC? Here in the US, the public broadcasting system is funded through voluntairy donations. Your telling me in England it is required? No wonder the US left England 🙂

You get what you pay for, I think.

Wow, that is strange to need to license your TV. They should make Monitors for VCR's if you don't want the BBC stations....
Strange to need to pay money for the "Salt vs. Pepper" show. (static)

Originally posted by PaulieDo you need a license to own a radio? You need one to own a TV. Do you get a discount if you don't own a radio? I looked it up and saw that if your TV is American and only used to watch video (VHS and I guess DVD) you do not need a license so in that case I guess BBC radio is free 🙂

Originally posted by FeivelI guess maybe American TV's recieve a different wavelength so couldn't receive a British signal, so you don't have to pay. The BBC does get accused of producing some of the best TV and radio in the world so I don't think it can be a bad thing, whereas I get the impression that US 'public service' is widely regarded as a joke (?)

Radio is free. You get a discount if your TV is black & white only. The big joke a few years back was that you got a discount if you were blind - of £0.97!
