@diver saidWow, and I thought things were going in many bad directions over here.

Hoping that if you guys happen to have your revolution first, maybe you could cross the Atlantic to help us out.
@diver saidI heard it’s currently taking 3-4 years for a rape charge to get to court.

@Drewnogal saidThe UK court system is swamped with crime and criminals. In the last 20 years the incidence of rape increased by 700%, knife crimes by about 500%, and petty theft by over 1000%. Most of the perpetrators are immigrants, while the govt pretends there is no problem.

Trial by peers will likely put more criminals back on the streets

@Drewnogal saidEven before recent times, my thinking is that people like Trump have observed how long the justice process takes (for wealthy and savvy connivers) and how long it can be delayed, therefore they can get away with anything in whatever moment, and it will be quite a while (if ever) before the law catches up with them.

Thank goodness for mortality, though! 😉
@diver saidSo who is responsible for this decision?

@Drewnogal saidIt is, and it was the Tories who allowed the system to become so back logged. It wasn’t great when they inherited it to be fair.

However there are challenges from some within the judiciary (Barristers etc) that this move will not significantly reduce processing times. The courts need massive funding and the current government isn’t providing it; but they seem to have lots of money for lots of other things.
Nevertheless the government have to get the bill through both Houses; many on their own benches already object and the Lords will shred it I suspect.
It is worrying that they see this move as the solution though; that this is the lever they want to pull.
@Ghost-of-a-Duke said2027 has been pitched by some, but I think Starmer will try and hang on till the bitter end. If his party boot him after May 26 and Rayner gets voted in then you could be right.
I predict an early general election, late 2026.
Either way the main opposition parties may have to unite in coalition to ensure they get the breadth and depth mandate for the levels of reforms required. Not clear how that’s going to happen given they are at each others throats most days 🙄
