@diver saidEverything needs massive funding. Our wonderful University Hospital of Wales is in a shameful state.
It is, and it was the Tories who allowed the system to become so back logged. It wasn’t great when they inherited it to be fair.
However there are challenges from some within the judiciary (Barristers etc) that this move will not significantly reduce processing times. The courts need massive funding and the current government isn’t providing it; but they seem to have lots o ...[text shortened]... s worrying that they see this move as the solution though; that this is the lever they want to pull.

@diver saidThe next government will be a coalition of some form. (Either Labour and Lib Dems or Tories and Reform). I don't think any single party will be strong enough to get a majority.
2027 has been pitched by some, but I think Starmer will try and hang on till the bitter end. If his party boot him after May 26 and Rayner gets voted in then you could be right.
Either way the main opposition parties may have to unite in coalition to ensure they get the breadth and depth mandate for the levels of reforms required. Not clear how that’s going to happen given they are at each others throats most days 🙄

@diver saidI didn't realize you had a Justice Secretary. We don't have a similar post in the US. We do have an Attorney General, which probably encompasses the duties of your Attorney General and Justice Secretary. Interesting that Starmer has signed off on it. It seems his post is more dependent on British voters. This can't have broad support from British citizens.
The new Justice Secretary, David Lammy. But it also has sign off from the Prime Minister (Starmer) and the Attorney General (Hermer).
But it helps to put a face to whom to blame.
@Drewnogal saidIn America we say that the previous administrations have only "kicked the can down the road", meaning to ignore responsibility to do anything about it.

Efforts (such as they are) to combat global warming get this criticism most. But it shows up in economics, too. Government never seems to understand the average citizen, it tends to focus on the billionaires.
@Rajk999 said"Most of the perpetrators are immigrants"
The UK court system is swamped with crime and criminals. In the last 20 years the incidence of rape increased by 700%, knife crimes by about 500%, and petty theft by over 1000%. Most of the perpetrators are immigrants, while the govt pretends there is no problem.
Trial by peers will likely put more criminals back on the streets
This is useless opinion, not fact.
"Trial by peers will likely put more criminals back on the streets."
Yes, by all means, substitute firing squads for rule of law. Idiot.
