UK social media ban

In the UK if you’re under 16 you are banned (will be) from social media; period.
If you’re 16-18 you are banned (will be) from live-streaming and other platform options.

Platforms include; Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, X (formerly twitter) and Instagram.

Platforms excepted; Bluesky, WhatsApp (meta).

Data shows that 60% of Australian aged restricted young people circumnavigate the restrictions.

The stated intention of the UK government is to protect children; juxtaposed to the same government whipping its own MPs to vote against a national enquiry into the multi-decades long grooming and rape-gangs scandal.

Thoughts?

How will this work from a tech perspective.?
What will be the impact on adults in terms of personal digital privacy?

A UK Liberal Democrat MP filmed her own daughter crying about losing her social media access as she told her it was for her own protection … and then posted it on … social media.

You really couldn’t make this stuff up.

Btw YouTube is also banned. For kids.

Clearly I feel quite strongly about this; apologies if I’m rubbing the fur up the wrong way. And I accept that children need protecting from viewing the horror that this world is via the window of the internet.

But please feel free to bookmark this thread and call me out later; but I’m claiming that we are walking straight into a digital ID dystopia. If you don’t know what that is then please do your own research.

in 1992 my nine year old son came to me and asked if i would do something for him and not tell his mother
his same age buddy from down the street and taught him how to download pictures of naked women
he could not figure out how to get the incriminating evidence off the computer hard drive
i became his accomplice and thoroughly deleted the (rather mild) photos
i did not teach him how to do the deletion thing himself
he figured that out pretty quick on his own

i remember the exact date i learned to not google a thing
not so much the "date" date
but i remember what it was i was encouraged to see

My, almost 5 year old, granddaughter has more “tech” (computer) abilities than I do. Having said that my abilities in this area are…well let’s just say I can turn on my devices and get to RHP. More than that and…for me there is no more. Good luck to the powers that be in trying to make this plan work.👍

I believe they're copying the Australian legislation, which is sort-of working. The smart kids that can get around it don't need protection, it's having some effect on the other ones. Age is supposed to be verified by the platforms but the reports are full of stories about kids who fooled the system and a few adults who got caught up. It was always going to be a stupid idea, but then as far as I'm concerned all social media is a stupid idea.
