The US has always portrayed itself as trying to promote and defend democracy in the world and proclaims itself the 'land of the free'. In view of this I am setting the following competition :

How many examples can you give since the second world war where the US government supported, directly or covertly, oppresive and undemocratic regimes?

RULES : Abusive, incoherent or just plain stupid posts will be disqualified.

Yes.

The satisfaction of knowing that you are the smartest person on this site. What greater prize could there be (apart from a million pounds i suppose!)

What does that fact that the US proclaiming itself the "land of the free" have to do with how many oppresive regimes it has supported. OK, so we have have had some horrible leaders who have supported shitbirds like Baby Doc (now France coddles him), the South Vietnamese Govt of the 60s, the Shah of Iran, etc. Before you start slinging shit across the pond, look at what GB and France did to the Palestinians when they took their land and gave it to the Jews. What about GB's abandonment of India before the Hindus and Muslims could come to any agreement on territorial disputes, resulting in two nuclear powers a stone's throw away from ground zero. Shall we mention Northern Ireland?...let's go back 900 years to William Wallace and the Scots...get my drift? I love you Brits, 'cause you are our only true ally, but let's clean up our proverbial "back yard" before we start pruning somebody elses trees. Cheers 😲

Sorry to any of my RHP friends over seas... but I don't like this game either. I could think of a nasty game or 2 to play with any country.

Phla-

Well said. While I am harshly critical of much US foreign policy, the US is clearly not alone amongst the set of countries that have undermined democratically elected regimes while pursuing their colonial or neo-colonial interests.

history is useful, i think there is some point to this game. but not enough for me to bother playing.

much more interesting to me is the present: is the us foreign policy doing this now?

i do not know. but i would like to.

naturally i would like to know if australian foreign policy is too.

The Australian foreign policy is for their teams to win all cricket and rugby matches played in foreign countries.I know I am South African and have been suffering because of this policy for many years.

Yes, there are lots of countries with an imperialist, colonialist past. Yes, we could have a game based on what regimes Britain, France, the former USSR, China or anyone else has supported in the past.

The difference is that the US is currently embarking on a series of imperialist, colonialist adventures. Much more so than any other nation on the planet. That's why, if we're going to play this game, the US is the best subject. Its not about being anti-American - its anti-imperialist.

Do we get bonus points for a 'country' which has weapons of mass destruction, has violated loads of UN resolutions, is constantly invading neighbouring countries threatening the stability of the whole region and currently gets billions of dollars in 'aid' from the US?

An extra clue - the current leader of this country only avoided getting indicted for war crimes on a technicality.

The war criminal is Sharon, for the massacres he oversaw in Tel al-Zaatar, in East Beirut, Lebanon. The country, or, more accurately, US client-state of which you speak is Israel.

The points you bring up only clarrifies the original post . We never learnt from history world powers , and mistakes or arogance was ours . Since you canot change the past try to influence the future. That is the main message. But to the first post as long man has been you will always get big big blunders. Yes the fight for your own belief to over ride others goes on. As the cold war was just another piont both sides didnt want the other to win.

My apologies Johan. We examined a list of possible foreign policies and just picked the easiest.

A couple of sites which might help (some examples are pre WW2).

www.thirdworldtraveler.com/US_ThirdWorld/dictators.html
www.tfclub.tripod.com/list.html

I don't know the organisations behind the sites, but these lists look like the usual suspects plus a few I'd not heard of.
