Ghana is not weak, and hasn't been for years. Ghana have been making an impact at youth level for a long time, and it's been one of the great mysteries that they hadn't managed to translate that into World Cup qualification at senior level. Well, they finally have - and not only did they beat the USA, they comprehensively outplayed the Czech Republic in one of the best performances of the tournament.
The USA v Ghana referee was the same one that officiated for Australia v Brazil. He hardly covered himself with glory in either match. I don't know whether the refs really affected the outcome in USA's 2nd or 3rd matches, but in both cases there were certainly more discussion-worthy incidents than a football purist would be comfortable with.
It's strange how the refs have become talking points more and more as the tournament progresses. On the first few days, the refereeing seemed to be remarkably good. There were several referees who I thought did really good jobs at controlling matches but letting them flow. One was from Singapore, I forget who the other good ones were.
The first turn for the worse was Australia v Japan (the ref admitted as much afterwards) and it's kept on happening. Some have been excessively whistle- or card-happy (the USA/Ghana and Australia/Brazil ref is one), and a couple have had the opposite problem, ignoring rugby tackles in the penallty area.
It's all been very disappointing lately. I hope that with fewer matches from here on, it enables FIFA to use only the referees who HAVE done a good job. Look out for Mr Singapore to make multiple appearances. 😉

I have no problem with criticism of the play of my team or any other team (I seem to remember, for example, that Ragnorak had some perfectly valid comments about the Australia v Brazil match), but at least have something worth saying.
