what's the scoop with players claiming wins against vacationing opponents? I am playing someone who has had his flag set for less than 2 weeks but his rating is plummetting from timeouts. is this fair? is this common on this site?
Alas, I shall digress one more time that anyone planning on being away for a while can doing a VAST number of things to prevent themselves from being timed out. It should be A+ apparent from my game history that I don't give a hoot about points, but I am truly growing frustrated by the massive amount of talk there is about people getting timed out when their vacation flag is up.
The rules are concise, clear, and fair to everyone. What's the beef? If I get a challenge with a 3 day TO, fine. If a week later that player puts up their flag and says they won't be back for two weeks, I could care less...their getting TO'd. The variation in TO restrictions exist for a reason, as do the ability to delete challenges before they start, as does the TO filter, as does all of the many ways a person can plan ahead. If playing by the rules is "unsportsman" like, then I am at a loss for words. It's the friggin rules for god sake! This site is set up so that people who only move once a month can play here without the possiblity of being TO'd. If you get TO'd, there is no one but yourself to blame. Pout, point fingers, whatever, it is still your own danged fault.
I mean no offense to anyone by any of this, but I have strong views regarding this matter, to the extent that I may leave if the rules are changed in favor of all of the complaining. I have made suggestions in the site ideas forum that would significantly reduce the number of TO's without altering the rules at all or creating any stipulations therein. I just play for fun, but it really puts a burr under my saddle to hear talk of changing a good and fair system because some vocal people can't plan ahead for themselves and want the world to accomodate them.

The claim win icon against an opponent has been on for some time now and so far I haven't taken the win but I would have appreciated some message from my opponent giving me a time when he will be able to move again. However, I have noticed that he has been timed out by a alarming amount of people. I do believe in claiming timeout wins if my opponent just can't be bothered to make the moves. I'll give the player the benefit of the doubt for the mean time.

Originally posted by OmnislashSportmanship has nothing to do with following the rules, it's how you deal with the rules, IMHO. The time-out system is adequate in general, but doesn't deal well with anomalies. That's why the vacation symbol was introduced. Things can come up that prohibits people to abide the time out settings that seemed entirely feasible at the time the game was set up.

Claiming a time out when you're in a lost position only because someone left for a holiday is very unsportsmanlike in my book, even if it is in accordance with the rules. Since many people seem to be confronted with the frustration such losses bring with them, asking for a change in the time out system to accomodate holidays and other departures from your regular playing schedule is a legitimate question, again IMHO.
