Spain is more nearish.

New York is a State in the US and New York City is a city in the State of New York.
Spain is an entire Country.

How about Wales?

In one week you could just about manage all of the distilleries on Islay. Why go anywhere else?

You call New York "nearish"? I would probably prefer a smaller time difference if I had only a week. Apart from that, it really depends on what you want (relax? see lots of interesting stuff (nature? culture?)? adventure? what kind of climate? etc.) and what you have already seen.

Everybody needs a break,
Climb a mountain or jump in a lake.
Some head off to exotic places,
Others go to the Galway Races.
Mattie goes to the South of France,
Jim to the dogs, Peter to the dance.
A cousin of mine goes potholing,
A cousin of heres loves Joe Dolan.
Summer comes around each year,
We go there and they come here.
Some jet off to ... Frijiliana,
But I always go to Lisdoonvarna.

Not sure, just some memories and good food really. Never been to Noew York, and a lot of people do it in a weekend, so i thought a week would be enough...Rome sounds nice, and the flights are cheap enough. I was looking at Venice at the start of the year. Time is a factor as far as visas are concearned, and i'd like to read a rough guide before i choose.

Viva, Las Vegas. I'll be there May 5 - May 10. I'll buy any of you a drink if you're there.

who are these people who do new york in a weekend? 7 hour flight roughly with checking in time at the airport plus recovery from jetlag when they return... geez. as long as you had a couple of days of to recoveer when you get back before you start working again i'm sure you could see/do a lot in a week.

i've never been to new york but i'd rec going to america to anyone who hasn't been.

shame about the weak euro against the dollar though, would be cheaper saying within the euro.

Yes Barcelona. Relatively close (for you) and lots of "things" to see and do. Picasso Gallery a must and the Ramblas and.....well I could go on and on.

Vacation ideas (you bloody turncoat).

Seton Sands in East Lothian is the destination of choice for most weegies???

Good riddance.

Edit (for all non-Scots): It is not actually a bad place and is a good base for exploring Edinburgh and the Fife regions and I understand some of the static caravans can be rented quite cheaply, excellent location if you wish to visit the Fringe, the number 26 bus goes from the caravan park, straight into the city centre.
