    Love Italy but the cities stink (not literally).
    No, the streets in Florence actually stink. A lot of Italians smell in general to be honest, the consequence of taking public transport is that you see the real population and in Italy it's not pretty.

    I'd put London ahead of any Italian city and not taking into account the language. Lisbon is really nice, could live there.

    Venice stank in August but I mainly visited in Spring or Autumn when I never noticed any town or city smelling. (Venice, Rome, Florence, Turin, Pisa, Naples)

    But city living in Italy seems really fraught. Couldn't do it. But love to visit.
