Gosh darn it... I am getting the counter of doom thing again, System shut down in 60 seconds.

This comes after the message reading

LSA Shess (Export Version) has encountered a problem message...

Hope someone might have some good tips for me... my computer has not stayed up long enough to finish a virus scan yet.

I hope to get that done today, but I am at work right now.

Hep me! Hep me!

I found a strange file, couldn't be cleaned so I deleted it.

It was stress reliever... but named something ok Ao12r.exe. It was not the stress reliever program where you click the screen and kill ants etc.

I also shut down System Restore... but still get the LSA message.

In reg edit I found LSA information... but am afraid to delete it.

I just got the countdown, but it shut off this time! So still have a bug but not so bad now.

Hep me!

OS version? If it's XP, 98, or ME, then start, run, msconfig, and clear all checkboxes from startup.

XP has ability to start in safemode to get rid of any nasty startups...

Yeah, thats a new virus thing.
My computer (2000Server) kept rebooting. Then I read slashdot...

Go to microsofts site and download the fix.

I had something two months ago. I went and bought a wipe disc cd and cleaned my disc spotless. Nothing, nada! The nice thing about starting over was that I could load everything in the correct way instead of the factory set up. I was fortunate that I could back up what little I needed to keep, and I was glad it was not the computer that I use for work. I guy that used to work in the office caught something simular to what you have and it took about 2 weeks until the machine would not even boot anymore. We tried everything but could not fix it. If I was you I would back up any imortant files you have now while you still have the chance.πŸ˜‰

Thanx all you guys! Some newer version of McAfee's uploaded and found the worm quick... Now I am doing another full scan.

My OS is Win XP Home.

I had a similar bug a couple months back, that is why I said I have the "countdown of doom again"!

So, after this last clean I hope the thing is all set. If not I will visit the web page listed.

Thanks for helping you guys, with any luck I'll be ok now.

Got to say it at the rsik of sounding smug- these problems only trouble those who run Windows based machines.

This site looks perfect under Linux and Konqueror - thanks Russ.

Are there any issues with Linux that wouldn't let me use my 3d accelerator, 2 Monitors with different backgrounds and resolutions... and I guess stuff like windows office etc?

Can you get to www.uchess.com?

Any Flash / Java problems???

I've thought about switching OS... Might as well see if I can get some info out of you about it.

There are actually many new viruses going around that you should be careful of....many have been sent to me but my laptop is a mac so cannot read the virus file, but the monster one that keep being sent to me comes as a PIF and usually is attached by some b*****d calling it your file, or you details etc....be very careful of that one.

I've used Linux with a Matrox G550 dual head with no problems (I actually run OpenBSD/Firebird currently). My setup just builds one huge display, but you can easily run each monitor at different resolutions.

Point taken about 3d accelaration, but I run a DH for desktop space, so 2D performance is only important.
I can't see the point of spending loads on fast video cards to play latest PC games - consoles are more economical for this.

There are Open Source alternatives to Office, but it can be a pain as my employer continues to use Microsoft.

Not sure about Uchess - Flash issues. I don't allow Java (only javascript) but I'm sure someone will let you know. I imagine under Linux at least, there are no problems...

If you are interested I would start by setting up dual boot, Windows/Unix. Keep all your windows only programs, but use linux/bsd to connect to Internet in the hope it is securer - that's what I do.

Cheers.

Worm Strikes Hundreds of Thousands of Computers
By Brett Young, Reuters

HELSINKI (May 3) - A fast-spreading computer worm similar to last year's massive "Blaster" has struck hundreds of thousands of PCs globally and it remains unclear how many will be infected, a top computer security official said Monday.

Data security firm F-Secure says the worm, which surfaced at the weekend and is known as "Sasser," automatically spreads via the Internet to computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system, especially Windows 2000 and XP.

The worm does not need to be activated by double-clicking on an attachment, and can strike even if no one is using the PC at the time. When a machine is infected, error messages may appear and the computer may reboot repeatedly.

"Compared to what happened with Blaster ... last August ... this virus has all the same features," Hypponen said, noting that both worms exploited relatively new holes in Windows and frequently caused computers to reboot.

For home computer users, people should make sure they have downloaded a corrective-code software patch to fix the breach. If their computer is infected, the patch must first be downloaded before the virus is removed or else the PC could catch the worm again.

F-Secure said the worm emerged 18 days after Microsoft posted the software patch on its Web site. This continues a common pattern with viruses whereby companies announce flaws in their software and hackers race to exploit them.
